Death in Spigg Wood Elversford Mysteries Book 1 edition by Linda Gruchy Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I'm a readaholic, but at the moment I'm in a space where I'm finding it hard to concentrate on most books, so this had to be good to hold my interest. And it is good. I was compelled to keep reading it, despite the fact that I have other very pressing demands on my attention right now - I just kept sneaking time out to see what happened next. It's crime fiction but the plot is unusual, the characters well drawn and the twists and turns kept me guessing. It's obviously well researched too as the court scenes and the sections involving custody and so on are so plausible. I felt for Meg, one of the main characters. Her situation was out of the ordinary in that she was suspected of breaking the law even though she had been defending herself against violent criminals who were trying to kill her. Her emotional reactions to her predicament made involving reading. The police characters were sympathetically and realistically drawn too, rather than the stereotypes that usually inhabit the pages of crime fiction.

The only factor that jarred very very slightly was Meg's relationship with her children she seemed to interact with them in an old fashioned manner, reminiscent of the 50s. But this is a minor point, doesn't reflect on the book in general and may just be my personal perspective or a part of Meg's personality anyway.

One of the most enjoyable reads this year and I'm at a loss to understand the minor number of negative reviews it's got.
If you're looking for a book to make you feel, to incite a reaction, this book should do it. I found myself frustrated and angry and thinking "Good grief! You call this a legal system!" A more fitting title would be something like `In Defense of Meg Rusher' or `To Prosecute Meg Rusher.'

Meg claims self-defense when the police come upon the bloody scene of her and two adult men. They're both down while she's not. She is a master kick-boxer; They have their own defense.

The police procedure and courtroom drama should have you believing that Death in Spigg's Wood is truly about the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law.

What I liked about it? Just that. It was able to incite a reaction from me. Frustration and anger. And that's good enough for me.
An enjoyable but scary book when you realize that the truth may not set you free. I love books about the UK and how crimes are solved - this is one about how a crime committed and the clues etc. pointed away from the real plot and killer/s. If there are more books in this series I will definitely buy them.
I'll start off by saying that I had high hopes for this to be an intriguing read, as I love a good mystery / suspense story. Sad to say that I was sorely disappointed by the time that Meg was nicked by a very biased copper, just because he could, after she had already been bailed. If even 10% of any of the behaviours of the story and procedures in the story actually take place in real life in Great Brittan, I'm happy to never set foot there in this life or next, as it would seem that they cater to the criminal even more than we do here in the U.S., if that is even possible.

I read in many of the other reviews on here of the writing being "punchy", wow! The only thing I feel "punchy" about the writing is "punch drunk" from all the words being thrown down in such a long and drawn out description and story that beats around the bush and beats the dead cat to a pulp. It's like the author is being paid by the word and not the story. I've put this down and picked it back up so many times I've lost count. I normally finish a book in two to four sittings, but this has taken me over a month to get through, I was almost at the point of wanting to just delete the book and not bother to finish it, but I've never not finished a book, so I stuck it out, mostly to find out what was going to happen to "Nutmeg" (As if I still cared at this point! Just still slightly curious.) Then all the lose ends still left dangling out there at the end of the story, leaves a bad "taste".
There were other references to this being "fast paced", those people must lose foot races to their garden snails if they think this story is "fast paced"; to the contrary, it moves along ploddingly so as to be mired in muck, or like trying to walk waist deep in honey.

Fortunately throughout almost all of the book there were few if any editing errors, until the last chapter, where there were a number of petty grammar errors that should never have made it through to the final edition considering the thoroughness that went into editing the rest of the book. The few errors that cropped up in the overall book were easy enough to overlook (for me anyway), until they became so evident in the last chapter, then I can only call it negligence (or complacency).

The story line was interesting and had a lot of potential had it been fleshed out and not beaten to death in the form of a soap opera, there was so much more of the story that needed to be explored, and could have been had there been less "fluff" and more "stuff" in the writing. There was a great deal of useless "set building" and "character dressing" that ended up being wasted where that word space could have been used to expand the content of the story and add depth to the content and drive the tale.

While I didn't dislike this book, I can't say that I liked it either, I'll just say I'm satisfied to be done with it. I won't be in any hurry to get another of this author's endeavors until I wade through the list of books on my kindle waiting to be read now.
Suspenseful - I veered throughout the book between the guilt or innocence of the main character. I love courtroom dramas, of which this was an excellent example, if a little long drawn out in some instances. I feel obliged to warn any prospective readers that the book does contain some explicit language which, although doubtless in context, might offend some people, for which I deduct one star. Otherwise, I enjoyed this as a good read and went straight on to "Death in Flitbury Marshes".
